Our 200th post!
Subject: Maggie Smith
Prompt: Behind the Scenes
# of Pictures: 25
Innocent Bystanders: Rod Taylor, Robert Stephens, George Cukor, Celia Johnson, HRH Princess Margaret, Alec Guinness, Diana Rigg, Gordon Jackson, Pamela Franklin, Diane Grayson, Jane Carr, and a few unknowns.

Young Cassidy, 1965

Rehearsing for my favourite (albeit incongruous) scene in the movie. Find the clip here. Seriously, though – what would a film be without a bit of loving by the river? Especially a film with a rather... realistic depiction of the Easter Rising. Naturally, it needs a love scene to lighten it up LOL!LOL!

Tired after a long day of filming and *cough*makinglovetoRodTaylor*cough*.

See? Rod’s tired too! (After all, what else can you do on a rainy day? They couldn’t film!) Notice his hand resting familiarly on her back. And also notice that she’s wearing his coat! Aaaah!
In regards to the following set of pictures: it is a very very very good thing that the internet did not exist back in the 1960s. Because if Robert Stephens had seen these pictures I doubt if he and Maggie would’ve gotten married, and then the world would be bereft of Toby Stephens! The horror! Despite all that, the following set is one of my favourites in the world – I do adore the whole Maggie/Rod dynamic, even as much as I love Maggie/Robert.
NOTE: Rod DID try to do the honourable thing and marry her... he actually proposed marriage during the first week of filming The V.I.P.S. (their first film together), even though he was already married. So, yeah. Right intentions, but too bad he wasn’t able to carry them out properly LOL!

Aw, they both look so happy! The sun is shining, they’re in love, and thankfully his wife and her lovers are hundreds of miles away! Oh, happy day!

I want a man like this. Just sayin’...

Whispering sweet nothings into Rod Taylor’s ears...

Again, I want a man like this. Preferably Australian or British. Muscled, tanned... basically Rod Taylor in this picture. Any applicants? LOL!
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, 1969

Jenny: Would you like a rosebud?
Teddy: A what?
Sandy: It's the favorite sweet of little Princess Margaret Rose.
And this is why HRH Princess Margaret paid a visit to the set LOL!

PICTURE OF WIN. It seems though Jean Brodie does get along with Miss Mackay after all!

I have no clue who this woman is but Maggie looks so happy in this picture! Too bad she was kind of strung out during the filming of this movie…

Maggie and Gordon Jackson! Taking a break from filming.
Two of my favourite pictures ever!

‘I can still recall our last summer/I still see it all/Walks along the Seine, laughing in the rain/Our last summer/Memories that remain.’
Yes, I do think of ABBA when I see this picture.

Oh so romantic... too bad it was too good to last! This picture makes me want to write fanfic.
The Beaux’ Stratagem, 1970

After a performance. Maggie is slightly bemused at the way Robert’s nursing that brandy (or whatever it is.) Also, this outfit totally should’ve been in the “bad hair and outfits” picspam, because it kiiiiiind of sucks. No, not kind of. It really sucks.

Nervous!Maggie! Oh, my heart goes out to her... yeah, even though this picture was taken almost forty years ago. And that... thing... she’s wearing looks even more like a burlap sack than it did in the previous picture!
Travels With My Aunt, 1972

Maggie and George Cukor on the set of Travels With My Aunt, with Maggie in her schoolgirl’s uniform. I bet that really gave Robert a welcome jump of his libido... not that he needed it!

They still look so in love, even though Robert had already 1) attempted suicide, 2) left the National Theatre, 3) started sleeping with Mary Queen of Scots author Antonia Fraser, (“I was her last bad boy”, he wrote) 4) had a one-night stand with Vanessa Redgrave, 5) slept with his children’s nanny, and 6) totally and irreparably screwed up his relationship with Maggie.
Notice how he’s rather in-character as the old lech he plays – he’s looking down at her chest!
Private Lives, 1972
I’m going to take this opportunity to say, right now, that Noel Coward was a god among men. Hence my LJ tag to this effect. Also, I love this set of pictures (yes, I know I say that a lot LOL!) But Maggie looks so pretty (even with the rather excessive eye makeup)!

Murder by Death, 1976

Alec Guinness is clearly used to female flattery, evidenced by how he ‘stands all aloof’ while Maggie looks at him admiringly.
Evil Under the Sun, 1982
Maggie has possibly her worst hair ever in this movie, though I really love these behind-the-scenes pictures! The fact that she’s hanging out with Diana Rigg has nothing to do with why I like these pics, I swear!

‘You put your right foot in,/You put your right foot out,/You put your right foot in/And you shake it all about./You do the Hokey Pokey/And you turn yourself around,/That's what it's all about!’

Peekaboo! We see you!

Under my umbrella ella ella, eh eh eh!

I didn't see most of them, so thank you for posting, you did a wonderful work! (:
I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
These are fantastic! I may have to post more than once because I am so blown away! I had never seen many of these. Thank you! Thank you!
And Rod Taylor was a STUD. So hot. I often have little happy "thoughts" about him....
I tried to use a lot of the rarer ones in my collection this time around, but I had quite a difficult time picking them out anyway LOL!
Rod definitely WAS a stud - have you seen Young Cassidy? Absolutely gorgeous! (And he has his shirt off for a good portion of the first bit of the movie ;D)
I would load the movie on youtube (at least the Maggie scenes) if I had the right programs.
Thanks for taking the time to do the picspams. I really will be smiling all day!
I've uploaded part of the scene by the river on YouTube, when I had my old laptop. I haven't quite figured out how to format things into YouTube videos on my new one yet. I'll have to upload that and Travels With My Aunt.
I really enjoyed putting it together, and I'm so glad to see it's appreciated :D
I'm a bit jealous of her too LOL!
Also, the woman you couldn't identify in the Jean Brodie pics is Muriel Spark. (See? I can, on occasion, be useful!)
OMG I HAVE HAD A PICTURE OF MAGGIE AND MURIEL SPARK FOR THREE YEARS AND I DID NOT KNOW WHO SHE WAS?!?! My excuse for this horrible lapse of fangirliness is that she looks a LOT different in that picture than she did in the pictures from her autobiography.
Here's one I found that looks in particular like her in the above pic:

And here's a nice collection:

Have you read the book?
I have actually read every single thing Muriel Spark has ever published, with the exception of the non-fiction analyses she wrote on the Brontes, etc. I've read Jean Brodie quite literally 96 times. That's why I'm still kicking myself about not recognising her!
